Under 10s take on local rivals Hallam Rangers
Crosspool’s Girls Under 10s played their first football yesterday since winning the Leicester City Ladies tournament in July, taking on local rivals Hallam Rangers (albeit the Under 11s) in a pre-season friendly. As well as shaking off the summer cobwebs, this was a great chance for the new players to find out what it’s all about.
All in all, it was a very useful experience. Although both teams were obviously very rusty (that’s why you play pre-season matches, after all), a lot was learned and hopefully both teams will be better prepared for Saturday’s league fixtures as a result.
The first half was goal-less, and Crosspool took the lead early in the second half with a shot from Lucy, tapped in by Sam. A few minutes later, Hallam equalised with a decent shot and the score stayed that way until a minute or so from time, when an unfortunate own goal from a corner gave the result to Hallam, 2-1.
An unaccustomed defeat for the Crosspool girls, but hopefully a useful wake-up call in time for Saturday. After a very shaky start, Crosspool eventually managed to carry out some good passing moves going forward, switching the play from one side to the other reasonably effectively. It was sometimes difficult playing a team who are mostly a year older and quite a bit bigger, but the real problem for Crosspool was a failure defensively to pressure the other team in the middle of the field, giving them far too much time and space on the ball. We’ll be looking out for that on Saturday!
Player of the match for Crosspool was Laura, for some excellent defensive tackles. All three of the new players (Emmily, India, Eve) did well, showing good promise for the future.
The Crosspool team:
Greta Barber-Stones, Laura Ridal, Emmily Antcliffe, Ayesha Khan, India Thompson-Carr, Lucy Cousins, Eve Sharman, Sam Tierney, Ellie Bird, Alex Mair, Lucia Wood-Bonelli
